Swansea

Situated east of the Gower Peninsula on the South Wales coast, Swansea is the second largest city in Wales. The name is pronounced “Swan's-y” not “Swan-sea”, since it comes from the Old Norse language where it meant Sven’s island. Swansea was a small settlement up until the 18th century, but by the 19th century Swansea had turned into an important center for Welsh heavy industry.

If you are in need of a solicitor specializing in criminal cases, there are several reputable law firms to choose among in the Swansea area. You can for instance find solicitors and other legal experts specializing in juvenile law, violent crime cases, parole probation, drunk driving cases, drug crimes, and arrests and searches. Swansea School of Law provides the area with highly skilled legal experts and is also famous for its extensive research. At Swansea University, you can for instance find a Centre for Commercial Law Studies, a Centre for Environmental & Energy Law & Policy, and the Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law.

Swansea is the second largest city in Wales in famous for its complex geology and astonishing scenery. The Gower Peninsula was the first area in the entire United Kingdom to become a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the region is also a frequent feature when it comes to handing out the Wales in Bloom awards. Swansea is a popular holiday resort, a commercial centre, and home to the highly regarded Swansea University. Its dock areas have gone through an amazing revival and are today home to a popular marina and several cutting-edge hi-tech industries. Unfortunately, Swansea is also famous for its high crime rate – especially when it comes to car crimes.

In 2002, Swansea was described by the BBC as a “black spot for car crime” and the South Wales Police, including its regional Cockett headquarter, has been accused by local residents for not being firm enough, especially when it comes to first-time offenders. The Swansea situation even made it into film; the1997 black comedy “Twin Town” is set in the city of Swansea and revolves around drug use, car theft and other forms of petty – and not so petty – crime.

Swansea has started to combat the problem of car related crimes in several different ways and the attempts are now showing clearly noticeable effects. Earlier, it was common for cars to be stolen, driven to a spot near the Blaenymaes and set on fire. This area has now been closed off by boulders and this simple measure has had a significant impact on the problem. The local police have also started to send warning letters to people who leave valuable items visible in their parked cars.

Drunk and disorderly behaviour is another acute problem in Swansea, especially in the pub and nightclub district in and around Kingsway and Wind Street. To combat the problems, the area is today heavily watched by police cameras and there are also a lot of police officers on patrol during the weekends. Drug use and drug related crimes, including theft, have also increase dramatically in Swansea, with teenage heroin use having grown to truly daunting levels.

There is however several areas where Swansea can be described very peaceful compared to the UK average. The city has for instance been subjected to relatively little football violence. Football violence and other forms of football related crime, including vandalism, is an ever increasing problem in many parts of the United Kingdom but in Swansea, it has only occurred occasionally – chiefly between Swansea City supporters and Cardiff City supporters.
