Earlier in its history, Newcastle served as a powerhouse for the Industrial Revolution and produced internationally acclaimed ships, light bulbs and glass. It has a long tradition of ground-breaking engineering endeavors and is for instance the birth place of Humphry Davy's safety lamp, Joseph Swan's electric light bulb and Charles Parsons' steam turbine.
