Birkenhead

Located on the west bank of the River Mersey, Birkenhead features a long-established sea port and is a traditional centre for ship building. Birkenhead Park was the first publicly funded park in Britain and is acknowledged as a forerunner of the Park Movement, a movement which eventually spread abroad and served to create internationally famous parks such as Central Park in New York. Birkenhead is also the birth city of the first Boy Scout group in the world.
